I found some difficulties along the way with the images and background but found that if I went back through the file that it was always a simple error of forgetting an equal sign, a quotation mark, a bracket etc and when that was rectified SUCCESS!
I found using HTML to be relatively simple but very time consuming. Overall, though, when the page was complete I felt a great sense of achievement to the point where I was showing people with a "look what I did" sort of pride which was great.
I think the differences between HTML and blogging is primarily the time needed to execute the actions and it is for this reason that I prefer blogging although HTML allows you much more room for creativity.

SATURDAY 5.00 CHAT ON ICQ
I found the site rather slow when it came to processing the chat - I mean that I would send a message and it would be, I felt, an awfully long time to receive a response. I must admit I found MSN a lot faster. Apart from that I found the site very similar to all other chat sites.
The chat itself started slowly with everyone a bit shy and then I found it very confusing as everybody was trying to talk at once and you don't really know what's happening. It is usually better to choose one person to chat to and change to a private chat.
There was one participant who found it exciting as it was her first time chatting and she admitted that she is a shy person and preferred this method of communicating with people which I found interesting as I am rather shy myself yet I prefer face to face any day. You know exactly who you are talking to.
I think this form of internet communication has benefits for people like the shy girl to open up which is great but for me personally, maybe I'm cynical, I have found that usually it is a lot of lies and people pretending to be something they are not.

CHAT
ICQ was incredibly easy to download although my first impression is that it is a bit of a dating site (god I hope not). My ICQ number is 426816935.
I am joining some members of the group on Saturday for a chat and will record my impressions (of the site not the people).

NEWSGROUPS
After an extensive search and unbelievable frustration I finally managed to join a group through Yahoo which was very simple and easy to use. Prior to that I found other newsgroup sites very complicated and of absolutely no interest to me.
I joined a group about Lisa Marie Presley as I am a big fan of her fathers and since I saw her live, Lisa herself. I sent a post introducing myself and have cut and pasted it here.
17096 Lisa Marie Live Hi I'm Carolyn and I'm new to the group - I am a big fan of Lisa Marie Presley and her music which as you would all know is very different from her fathers.... Carolyn Simmminestra78 3:43 am.
I hope that is okay.

EMAIL LISTS
1. What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards?
I feel that the pro's of email is that you can chose who you wish to acknowledge and allows you to decided if this is something you wish to take any further without any unnecessary intrusion. It allows you to research your point in a more complex way, gain proof of your discussion and converse only on the subject that you are discussing.
Discussion boards on the other hand I have found through personal experience to be, at times, abusive when I have expressed an opinion, with my opinion backed up with references and facts. If I am wrong I will be the first to admit it but find even then you are berated and made to feel small.
Other con's I have found is the incredible increase in SPAM mail from what unbeknownest to me, unsafe sites. I actually had to change my email address due to this problem.
2. Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?
Yes, very much so, there are many people who absolutely adore chat rooms to the point where they spend hours on them and in some cases meet up with people they have met on-line. YUK. I am not that gregarious and much prefer the old fashioned way of meeting someone new in person. I feel that you have an ability to guage their character in a personal interaction - pick up danger signs, lying etc.
Not to say that chatrooms are wrong for other people they are just not for me.
I do prefer email for myself as I like to know who I am communicating with, again my personal preference. I did experiment with MSN as a tool to converse with friends and through some hiccup, probably my fault found people on my list that I had no idea who they were. I still haven't figured out how that happened as my understanding was that you had to approve the person contacting you. This I found very intrusive and don't even get me started on FACEBOOK.
I do however, have a MySpace site which is the only one I found no problems with, it is just a bit of fun. I appreciate that people take it a lot more seriously than I do but I found it to be a secure site (for me anyway) and therefore acceptable.
As I said this is just me so therefore all different sites suit all different people and the kind of lifestyles they choose to lead.

MODULE TWO
Email Tutorial
I undertook the email tutorial and found it relatively simple as I am an incessant emailer (is that a word).
I did, however, find some useful information for the use of Outlook Express which was very helpful, regarding change of identity.
1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took can you glean from an email message?
You can glean what a users email package is from the senders address and domain, where the email originated from, where it has travelled i.e. has it been forwarded to many recipients or just to you.
2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all' functions of email?
In an office situation where more than one recipient needs the information being sent it would be faster using 'cc' - also in a social situation if there was a bit of gossip going around.
On that note, 'bcc' which is sending a blind copy to someone would be handy for confidentiality purposes. I would be very careful though.
In the situation where arrangements are being made reply all allows all of the people contacted to know that you will be attending.
3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?
It is essential to ensure that the recipient of an attachment has the compatible software in order to open the file. Always send the file in a format that can be read by their system e.g. Windows to Macintosh.
If you are unable to find out the recipients software it is advisable to send the file as a plain text document (ASCII) or as a rich text document (RTF) as this is a format which is able to be read by many different applications.
Formatting may be lost but at least the attachment will be able to be read.
4. What sort of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose
To be completely honest I only have one folder which is for correspondence to and from my boyfriend. I find it awfully handy when he denies until he is blue in the face that "he never said such a thing" - I have it in writing. Very handy in an argument situation.
5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?
See question 4. I use Outlook Express so therefore have a separate folder for my boyfriend correspondence in his name which I back-up on a hard disk periodically. God I'm sick aren't I.
I would however, if I still worked in an office would have separate folders for each issue addressed and possibly would have a filter system in place for repeat useless mail.

FTP
Finding a FTP client was remarkably easy, I just googled WS-FTP and there it was. I downloaded the file to the desktop with no drama.
The download itself was relatively fast and painless.
The InstallShield Wizard for WS-FTP Professional 2007 came up without any hassle. This is too good to be true.
OK, I thought that was too good to be true. I have encountered a problem regarding server address. I never know what it is - must write it down this time - finding it all a little too technical now.
So, I am now trying another FTP called Cute FTP Home 8.1. Downloading nicely so far but let us see.
I found this one much easier as it gave you the option of anonymous as probably the other one did had I stuck with it. Had a minor problem with the address and with the help of the discussion board (thanks guys) tried ftp://recall.curtin.edu.au and oilla. I realised then that CAPITALIZATION is what matters.
Cheers Guys

Well Telnet strikes me as being the precursor to such games as video tennis or very similar. The technical ability in those days was, compared to now, primitive, but then when you really think about it the same could be said for graphics and imagery, as well as creativity ten years ago.
I feel that Telnet, was in its time a major breakthrough that without it the internet would not be what it is today. Everything has to start somewhere.
Blinkenlights really was quite clever for its day and I feel that through experimentation and quite probably mistakes have enabled the system to "mutate" into the graphics that we see today which enables creativity a free reign.

At last, my computer is working properly and just managed to get through to the Telnet site, I am hoping now to move a lot faster. Telnet is very much like DOS but I would assume that it could give access to the deep dark annals of Deakin University when looking for something specific. I'm glad I know about it as it is an additional research tool.
Switched onto blinkenlights. Thank god I've seen the film, George Lucas would roll in his grave (that is if he was dead) hilarious.
Just going to have another look and think more about the question.
See you next time.

Still a bit confused but slowly getting there. I put in telnet:// in the url and nothing happened but now it has come up as an address so we might try that - trial and error is a wonderful thing.
